My friend Julia often volunteers. In September, the group she sometimes volunteers with had an event at Dulles Airport and she asked if I wanted to volunteer with her. The event was a plane pull to benefit the Special Olympics of Virginia. Having worked for an association for special education, I was really excited to help with this event.
We volunteered for the morning shift and got to the airport a little before 10 a.m. (so glad we chose the morning shift because the afternoon shift had to deal with traffic). There were a few other volunteers One Brick (the volunteer organization) and we headed to our assignment, the Kids' Zone! We got to help with the inflatable "rides" for kids.
Julia and I manned the big slide until about 2 p.m. We then got to walk around and enjoy the plane pull events for ourselves. Julia was fasting for the Jewish holiday, but I grabbed my free lunch. Luckily, just as we were walking over to see the plane pull area, they were doing speeches. We heard a young man with Down syndrome give a wonderful speech about disabilities and inclusion. We then saw a team of "superheros" pull a huge plane!
The event had to have just about every man's fantasy machine. They had trackers, military planes, old fashioned cop cars, antique cars and probably any other vehicle you can think of!
As you can see from the photos, it was a beautiful day! Gosh, the end of summer has given some great weather and I truly have enjoyed being outside as much as possible.

| That's Julia in the green. She doesn't like having her picture taken. |
